HHMI-MIT Biology Education Group launches multipurpose website

March 1, 2011

Conceptually analogous to a laboratory research group, the Education Group was first created by HHMI Professor Graham Walker of the MIT Department of Biology in 2002. In September 2010, Professor Walker reestablished the group and it is once again active on the MIT campus and beyond!

The Education Group is a collaborative of faculty, research scientists, postdoctoral associates, graduate students, and technologists interested in doing innovative work in science education. The group is mainly focused on developing and implementing curricular materials and educational tools for University-level and High School-level Biology.

On the Education Group's website, you'll find information about upcoming events and science education resources, including:

  1. Open Education Group meetings, structured similarly to laboratory group meetings, in which participants present information about their science education-related initiatives and receive feedback from peers.
  2. The free Seminar Series hosted on the MIT campus by the Education Group in which invited speakers who do interesting, innovative, and important work in education can share their valuable experience with our community.
  3. Information about science education resources, developed at MIT and elsewhere, that can be implemented in various educational settings.
  4. News regarding science education-related topics.

The Education Group is supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, which created the Society of HHMI Professors with the specific purpose of encouraging faculty at major research universities to devote more time to teaching undergraduates and developing new tools that engage students and enrich their science learning experience. Professor Graham Walker was among the first twenty HHMI Professors selected in 2002 by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute for their pilot program, and he was chosen again as one of the thirteen members of the HHMI Society of Professors for 2010-2014. The award provides resources for the reestablished Education Group to do some exciting work in Biology Education!
