OEIT's Violeta Ivanova was recently awarded an MIT Alumni Class Funds grant to develop a new undergraduate subject, "Visualization in Mathematics, Science and Technology", in collaboration with Professor Katrin Wehrheim.
In this new undergraduate subject students will learn essential visual arts principles, critical thinking, and analytic skills that will empower them to interpret and represent mathematical, scientific, and engineering information using modern visualization tools and media. The subject will enable hands-on experience for students to use different techniques and media (photographs, drawings, animations) to communicate visually concepts in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering to audiences ranging from domain experts to the general public.
Dr. Ivanova will develop and teach the new subject, which will be cross-listed in the Edgerton Center and the Department of Mathematics, and Prof. Wehrheim will advise on visualization assignments relevant to mathematics majors. A modular structure of the 12-unit subject will allow its syllabus to serve also as the basis for putting together short visualization tutorials that meet other pedagogical needs in the School of Science and School of Engineering.
