2.4.2.2 Channel Avulsion

Deltaic systems are often characterized by repeated channel abandonment. As the channel lengthens basinward, the effective hydraulic gradient drops resulting in increased instability due to a base-level depositional surface. Such conditions lead to channel avulsion (course abandonment) to other courses where steeper gradients exist. These changes in channels often accompany the formation of a new crevasse splay and the development of a lobe.
