4.3.1 Surface Drainage

Karst areas often lack well developed stream tributary systems. Major rivers often exist, but much of the surface water infiltrates underground eliminating or reducing the number of tributaries. Flooding is uncommon in karst regions as the excess water often flows underground, and the quantity of surface flow does not vary much between the high and low water levels. The extent to which the water flows underground depends on the degree of karstification.
