5.1.4 Oolite Deposits

Oolite deposits are features which are frequently associated with reef growth. Each oolite consists of a series of very small concentric shells usually deposited around a quartz grain or fossil fragment. After an oolite grows to about the size of a sand grain, it is transported and deposited along with the other clastic material through the wave action and currents. The oolites become cemented into a bed of limestone because of burial and compaction.
