8.4.5 Obsidian

When lava flows onto the surface of the ground and cools so quickly that separate minerals do not have time to form, the resulting natural glass is known as obsidian. Obsidian is usually black or dark brown, but can be grey when weathered. Obsidian may also show flow banding. Obsidian is acidic and fractures conchoidally.
