Surface and rain water do not flow far on karst terrains, but infiltrate rapidly into the rock and soil. For this reason, the surface may lack evidence of mechanical channeling of the water. The distance of flow before infiltration depends on the intensity of rainfall and the slope inclination. Minor solution features or lapies are created by this flow. The frequency and width of the rock defects (joints, bedding planes, faults) and the occurrence of sinkholes also control the infiltration.
