5.1.6 Reef Deposits

Reef deposits form in saline lakes as a result of algae action in the shallow water, particularly near the rocky prominences or islands. Deposits of aragonite and calcite form as the algae, attached to rock surfaces, produce rounded or curved surfaces which are concentric in cross section. These deposits become cemented together to form an extremely porous and permeable rock which is often mistaken for travertine or tufa.
