Magma is a naturally occurring molten rock material, generated within the earth and capable of intrusion and extrusion, from which igneous rocks are derived through solidification and related processes. Magma may or may not contain suspended solids, such as minerals, rock fragments, and/or gas phases. Magmas vary considerably in chemical composition; those which contain more than fifty percent silica are called acid, while those with less than fifty percent silica are called basic. Large reservoirs of magma are called magma chambers.
