4.7.14 Root Grooves

In covered karst, root growth often occurs in grikes and similar features which become filled with soil. These roots will grow in the root groove to a considerable depth; if the roots grow in a solution pipe, the term root pipe can be used. A solution pipe is a conical or cylindrical hole which allows infiltration of groundwater (the solution pipes may enlarge to form dolines). Root grooves and root pipes may not be visible until significant erosion of the cover occurs.
