3.1.3 Ice Sheets and Continental Glaciers

A mass of ice that is large enough to cover vast stretches of land is called an ice sheet. Ice sheets have a central "recharge" area and spread out from that center. A smaller ice sheet is an ice cap, while a large one, which covers most or all of a continental land mass is referred to as a continental glacier. The glaciers covering Antarctica and Greenland are continental glaciers.
