3.4.6 Terraces with High Drainage

Material deposited through the fluvial action around glaciers often contains large quantities of sand and gravel. Some till deposits such as lateral, terminal, and recessional moraines can contain up to 99% boulders. These type of deposits are very permeable and will provide good infiltration. A kame terrace, for example, is composed mainly of sand and gravel which was deposited along side the glacier. The deposits will sometimes extend considerable distances and grade into the outwash plain. Under these conditions, water can infiltrate very well through the permeable material. Such plains and terraces will show only little evidence of surface drainage (that is, no streams).
