4.7.12 Hollows

Near the surface, solution is often gravity controlled, and as slight depressions (hollows) form on the smooth surfaces, these features will gather more water and continue to grow. Depending on water flow, longitudinal hollows will develop which are very similar to rounded solution runnels. The hollows form in covered karst where the soil acts like a sponge to keep the water in contact with the bedrock. Hollows will not be seen unless significant erosion of the cover occurs.
